Software & Updates

General information & notes on software & updates.
A USB software update is possible on the following Fronius inverters:
  • Fronius Galvo
  • Fronius Symo
  • Fronius Primo
  • Fronius Eco
  • Fronius IG TL

To update the software version of the inverter, proceed as follows:

  1. Download the required firmware file from the Download Center:
  2. Enter the name of the inverter (e.g. Symo, Primo, Eco) and check “Firmware” in the filter.
  3. Copy the froXXXXX.upd file to an empty USB flash drive. This must be in FAT32 format.
  4. Connect the USB flash drive to the inverter’s USB interface. Note: Remove the lower cover of the inverter to do so.
  5. Start the update via the inverter display under “Setup --> USB à Software update”.
  6. The currently installed firmware version and the new firmware version of the inverter are now displayed under “Software update” if the USB flash drive has been inserted in the inverter. Press Enter again (fourth key from the left) to start the software update.

Note: please do not remove the USB flash drive during the update process!

  1.  Download the required firmware file from the Download Center on the Fronius website.
  2.  Disable the firewall and the anti-virus program.
  3.  Right-click on the downloaded firmware file and select “Run as administrator”. A window with the web server opens. You can now establish the physical connection between the Datamanager and the computer.
  4.  To do so, you need a computer (laptop or PC) and a patch cable (LAN cable, RJ45 cable). Use the patch cable to establish a physical connection between your computer and the Datamanager. The Datamanager’s LAN interface is located behind the lower cover of the inverter, to the right of the WLAN antenna. You can loosen the screw connection of the lower cover with a Torx screwdriver.
  5. The Fronius Datamanager features four LEDs arranged in a square to the right of the WLAN antenna and the LAN interface. There, between the front two LEDs and the PCB, you will find a small DIP switch which you place in the left position (position “A”).
  6. Now open a browser on the computer and enter the IP address “169.254.0.180” in the address bar. Confirm with the Enter key. If you cannot connect to this page, try accessing the Datamanager’s web interface from another web browser. If the Datamanager’s web interface still does not appear, do the following:

/ Use a different LAN cable.
/ Switch the switch to the left of the WLAN antenna on the inverter from “Slave” to “Master”.

  7. Navigate to “Firmware update” via the inverter display and select “Update via LAN”.
  8. Click on “Update”.
  9. An info window appears, which you must confirm after reading in order to be able to import the update.
  10.   Wait for the update process to complete. Caution: Do not turn off your computer during the update. The LAN connection between the computer and the Datamanager must not be disconnected during the update process. Please do not switch off the power to the inverter either.

On the inverter display, navigate to “Wi-Fi Access Point” under “Setup” and activate it

  1. Connect an end device (laptop/PC/smartphone/tablet) to this WLAN access point. To do this, go to “WLAN settings” --> “Find WLAN”
--> and select “Fronius_2XX.XXXXX” --> Enter “12345678” as the security key.
  2. After setting up the connection via WLAN access point, open a browser and enter the IP address “192.168.250.181” in the address bar. Confirm with the Enter key.
  3. If you have set up an Internet connection to the Datamanager via WLAN or LAN (system on Solar.web online), you can skip and continue to the next step: On the Datamanager’s web interface, under “Settings”, navigate to “Network” and select the type of connection “Internet via WLAN” or “Internet via LAN”. Select an option to connect to the Internet:

    Internet via WLAN:
Under “Networks found", search for your home network and click “Set Up”. Now a pop-up window with a security key prompt appears. Enter your WLAN network password and click “Confirm”. Then confirm the settings at the top with the large check mark. If the Internet connection is successful, the “globe” LED (LED with the four LEDs arranged in a square) should light up green. Caution: The router should not be far from the inverter, otherwise your WLAN network cannot be listed. Alternatively, you can use a wireless amplifier to improve the wireless connection. In addition, you can only connect to the Datamanager with 2.4 GHz WLAN networks.

    Internet via LAN:
After you select the “Internet via LAN” connection type, set the “Get IP address” LAN setting to “Dynamic”. Confirm the settings at the top with the large check mark. Now route a physical LAN connection (RJ45 cable) from the Datamanager to your home router. Proceed as follows:
  1. Unscrew the lower cover of the inverter to gain access to the Datamanager card LAN port. Use a LAN cable (RJ45 cable) to connect your computer (laptop/PC) to the Datamanager LAN port (LAN interface to the right of the WLAN antenna). Set the DIP switch next to the four LEDs arranged in a square to the “A” position (position switch to the right). If the Internet connection is successful, the “globe” LED (LED with the four LEDs arranged in a square) should light up green.
  2. On your computer (laptop/PC), navigate to “Firmware Update” in the Datamanager’s web interface and click “Check now”.
  3. A current firmware version is then displayed (if you are connected to the Internet) and you can click on “Update via web”.
  4. Click “Update” and wait for the update process to complete.

Caution: During the update, ensure that the Internet connection remains stable and is not disconnected. The inverter or Datamanager should not be de-energized during the update process.

If you cannot access the Datamanager web interface via a WLAN access point:
  1. In order to physically connect to the Datamanager, a computer (laptop or PC) and a patch cable (LAN cable - RJ45 cable) are required. Now use the patch cable to establish a physical connection between your computer and the Datamanager. The Datamanager’s LAN interface is located behind the lower cover of the inverter, to the right of the WLAN antenna. You can loosen the screw connection of the lower cover with a Torx screwdriver.
  2. On the Datamanager, to the right of the WLAN antenna, four LEDs arranged in a square are visible. There, between the front two LEDs and the PCB, you will find a small DIP switch, which you position in the left position (position “A”).
  3. Now open a browser on the computer and enter the IP address “169.254.0.180” in the address bar. Confirm with the Enter key. If you have set up an Internet connection to the Datamanager via WLAN (system on Fronius Solar.web online or the Datamanager’s “globe” LED lights up green), you can skip this step and continue to the next step.
  4. On the Datamanager’s web interface, under “Settings”, navigate to Network and select the “Internet via WLAN” connection type. Then select your home network under “Networks found”  and click “Set up”. A pop-up window with a security key prompt appears. Enter your wireless network password here and click “Confirm”. Confirm the settings at the top with the large check mark.

Caution: the router should not be far from the inverter, as otherwise your WLAN network cannot be listed – and a connection to the Datamanager can only be established with 2.4 GHz WLAN networks.

  5. Navigate to “Firmware update” and click “Check now”.
  6. A current firmware version is then displayed (if an Internet connection is set up). Click “Update via Web”.
  7. Then click “Update” and wait for the update process to complete. Caution: during the update, make sure that the Internet connection is stable and is not disconnected.
